High School - Taylorsville High School

I have been a member of the Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement club (MESA) from 2007-2014. For four of those years, 2009-2013, I have been the president. I started a service project that will continue even after my graduation. During my time in this club, I have engineered a egg drop machine, trebuchet, and a prosthetic arm.

During my past three years of high school, I have been a member of the Key Club. Through this club, I have been able to serve my community in several ways.

During Christmas, I was able to go with the club members to our local Walmart across the street from our school in order to buy items for families in need. We later wrapped up the presents and hand delivered them to all of the families on our list. During the spring time, the club members and I went to a retirement home in order to help out the senior citizens.

It was through the Key Club that I was able to be involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program.

For two years, I have been a volunteer for this program and have been paired up with the same Little ever since the day I volunteered. Through this program, I have been able to see first hand how a small gesture can go a long way in a young child's life. Being seen as a role model is a greater honor to me than my Little knows, and I try to uphold that title that she has given to me.

Throughout my three years of junior high, I was a part of the National Junior Honor Society Club. It wasn't until I was a junior in high school was I able to apply to be in this Chapter again. Like the Key Club, National Honor Society  has given me several opportunities to volunteer. Senior year specifically was when I was able to go help out a cancer institution with other members. I was able to hear stories of those who had fought and survived cancer, those who have fought and didn't survive, as well as those who had been diagnosed as of recently and are struggling to go through chemotherapy. My school had a charity week for this, and all of the money raised was given to this institution.

As I am pursuing the career field of medicine, I found joining a medical club appropriate. The Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) has further fueled my passion for the medical field. Throughout my senior year I was able to be an officer for this club. I was able to participate in the two day, one night state competition for this club. My team managed to place third in Creative Problem Solving, qualifying us for nationals in Tennessee. Being an officer, I was able to help in creating fundraising events and activities for my school at the Granite Technical Institute (GTI) along with the other officers.

College - University of Utah

I am a volunteer for Kids Crew at the Primary Children's Hospital. During my three hour shift at PCH, I get to play with patients and/or visiting children, create crafts, deliver items to patients, and clean toys.
As a program director at the University of Utah's community service center, the Lowell Bennion Center, I am in charge of a program called Lasting Link where I get to volunteer at a rehabilitation center. For an hour each week, I participate in activities with the residents at the Avalon Rehabilitation Center to promote social interaction among the residents.

Being the program director for Lasting Link also entitles me to work at the Bennion Center's front desk for an hour each week. I also log hours of the volunteers in my program as well as taking a few of them to and from the Avalon center. Towards the beginning, middle, and end of the semester, I meet with the community partner of Lasting Link as well as a Bennion Center student and staff member to discuss the program and how I can help towards improving it.

STEP is the college version of MESA, but students apply more engineering principles in club activities compared to the high school version, MESA, where students are exploring the overall field.

I was given the title of president for the STEP club as I entered into the U as a freshman in the fall of 2013. I am in charge of planning meetings, creating ideas for events, carrying out the planned events, and coming up with new ideas to improve the club.

Being the STEP president also entitles me to have a position on the student board of the College of Engineering at the University of Utah. I am able to discuss with other students on the board about how to get the members of my club more involved by teaming up with other clubs at the board meetings. As a student board member, I am also open to make connections with the other engineering clubs at the U in order for them to help me provide memorable events for my club members to attend.
